Bikes Of Transcontinental Race No11
25 July, 2025
For the eleventh edition of the Transcontinental Race, we see a longer distance than ever totalling an approximate 5,000km and five control points and parcours between the start in Santiago de Compostela, Spain and Constanta, Romania. Follow along with the from the DotWatcher team and veterans as the race unfolds in its new chapter.
We'll dig into the statistics of the bikes and equipment in the coming few days (keep an eye on our socials), but without an in-depth analysis it's clear to see the trend towards wider tyres. Long gone are the days of 28mm feeling progressive, more riders are on tyres between 40-44mm tyres than those riding sub-30mm tyres.
Good luck to all those tackling the race on Sunday evening, we'll be following closesly for your whole journeys.

Amelia Linnett
Age: 32
Location: Barcelona
Bike: I own exactly one bicycle: an Oxford Bike Works Expedition that is beautifully optimised for touring and that I have attempted to coerce into what I'm telling myself is a suitable setup for TCRno11, mostly by taking off any components I don't absolutely need (kickstand, mudguards, rack...).
But it is still very much a touring bike: steel frame and fork, 26in wheels with SON28 dynamo front hub, 3x8 groupset (midrange Shimano) with front friction / rear indexed thumb shifters (Microshift), a well-worn Brooks B17 saddle, and don't forget the flat handlebars.
I have added some aerobars (Pro Missile) alongside the Ergon GP5 grips for comfort and swapped out the flat pedals for a set of SPDs. I've also replaced the touring-classic but heavy Schwalbe Marathon tyres with a set of Continental Race Kings: an unorthodox choice for a road race, certainly, but I liked the feel of them better than any of the road tyres I could find in 26”, and who knows, maybe they'll help me out on the gravel parcours.
There’s no prize for heaviest bike as far as I’m aware, but I imagine this would be in contention at 15.5kg (just the bike, without bags or water). I'm hoping what it lacks in speed it will make up for in durability.
Key items of kit: My kit list is pretty standard (required items plus emergency bivvy + mat, basic layers for weather, first aid & repair kits), leaning towards the minimal in a probably futile attempt to compensate for how heavy the bike already is.
Aside from the bicycle itself, the least conventional item is probably the CrankTank4, which saves me from my least favourite cycling activity (reaching down for water bottles). It also serves as a reliable conversation starter when passers-by ask if it’s a petrol tank.

Bike: The best bike is the one you have. This is my adventure bike—equipped with wide tire clearance and tubeless wheels, which I believe makes a big difference compared to my aero road bike (a pity, though). It features a Shimano GRX RX810 groupset (46/30, 11-34), which is bomb-proof and will definitely help on the climbs. The setup is completed with Continental GP 5000 35mm tubeless tires.
Key items of kit: Same as with my bike, I carry my travel bags: an Alpkit handlebar bag, Roswheel and Apidura bags in the frame for the Canyon, and an Ortlieb bag on the seatpost, along with a trail vest. My sleep system is a bivvy bag, which fits entirely in the handlebar bag.

Bike: My trusty Fairlight Secan 2.0 will start its third TCR after 2022 and 2023, overpassing its « brother » Genesis Croix de Fer (from same father Dom Thomas) that has transported me twice till Meteora finish line in 2017 and 2018. I have refreshed its very subcompact customized 2x11 GRX transmission (TA Spécialités 44/28 x 11/40). I offered it sumptuous wide carbon Zolla wheels (with Ukrainian Trailmech rear hub) mounted with my favorite challenge Strada Bianca tubeless 40mm tyres. SON lights and Garmin 1000 GPS are powered by SON28 dynamo hub connected with Igaro D2 USB charger.
Key items of kit: A collector 2015 Apidura x Rapha handlebar bag is the only item that was previously in my gear list during four participations. I will take inside my complete ultralight randonneur sleep system : Katabatic Bristlecone bivy, Sea to Summit mat, Cocoon silk/thermolite liner, Pajak Radiclal X sleeping bag. An Apidura x MAAP saddle bag carries extra clothes (merinos warmers and long-sleeve baselayer, Café du Cycliste dyntex rain jacket, insulated jacket, gloves, socks ). And three Tailfin frame bags are used for my tools, tubes, papers, medecine and electronics. I'm bucking the cargo backpack trend by just having an ultralight packable bag for extra food or drinks.

Key items of kit: DIY handlebar panniers (arm warmers/socks etc., small waterbottles), very old frame bag (tools, bolts and other heavy stuff), Frankenstein of top frame small bags (phone/batteries/cables/toothbrush), rear rack made of bullhorn handlebar, former handlebar pannier converted to two side rear bag (clothing, spare tyres, food), compression bag with sleeping stuff - bivvy, pad (piece of thermo insulation), couple of garbage bags as covers/rain protection. Dynamo: SON28 paired with a Supernova M99 light.
I’m bringing a lightweight sleeping bag, a sleeping pad, and a couple of other luxury items: a second pair of bib shorts (both from Rapha’s wear testing lab, pee-friendly!) and plenty of space in my top tube bag for all kinds of food.
Let’s go!

Bike: Canyon Grail AL 7.0 (2020), my only bike and same bike I DNFed TCRNo8
Key items of kit: First of all, my goal for TCRNo11 is to finish in 3 weeks. My choice below is dictated by this goal -- endurance and comfort. So I can actually reach the Black Sea.
Tire: René Herse Babyshoe Pass TC 650B X 42 Endurance; I rode GP5000 32mm for "all road" until this year, non-stop punctures and used all the dynaplugs I could found in Europe -- I decided it's time for a change. I do not have too many choices with 650B wheels. Very happy with my 42mm Babyshoe so far. I am lucky to be in Berlin because Goetz (Dailybread // René Herse Distributor in Germany) is 15 mins away and he is an absolute angel!
Lights: KLite(front + rear blinker) dynamo, Exposure DIABLO MK13 for helmet for slow climbing
Aero Bars + riser: profile design, I had 30mm riser kit until a week ago, I put on 50mm riser kit. Life changing experience, for the first time I finally understood why people say this is where they can stay forever.
GPS unit: Wahoo Bolt x 2, charged by KLite USB charger during the day on the go
Water: 1.5L Nalgene (ARUNDEL Looney Bin Cage), plus an empty cage for gas station cold drinks. I will be wearing a hydration vest with 2L bladder which will be my main water resource on the go. I have also tested filling the bladder and Nalgene bottle with a bag of ice from gas station -- highly recommend.
Hydration vest (Salomon ADV SKIN 12): wallet/passport/brevet card, phone, lip balm, sunscreens, Avene Cicalfate Repair Cream (my choice of chamois cream), baby wipes, mepilex (saddle sore on-the-go repair routine), a disposable film camera
Top Tube bag: power bank, USB charger, pump, maintenance, repair, tool stuff
Feedbag (Revelate Design): mostly empty, salt pills, spork, little hand massage ball, a microfiber cloth for chain maintenance
saddle bag:
- sleeping (OR emergency bivy + sleeping pad + sleeping bag), I will aim to sleep in hotels every night, sleeping kit is for psychological safety.
- rain (Velotoze + dishwasher gloves + SOS blanket + GORE rain jacket + extra pair of socks)
- cold (leg warmer + long gloves + puffy jacket + buff)
- charger + cables
- luxury item: extra riding kit for a mood changer and saddle reset (merino t-shirt + Albion ZOA shorts), birkenstocks (Eva)
- luxury toiletry bag (self care + "butt bag"): this is the most important piece of my kit, in addition to tooth brush and paste, I also have a hair brush, a few facial masks for emotional breakdowns, saddle sore night/morning repair routine (zinc cream, antibacterial cream, mepilex, etc etc), ibuprofen gel

Bike: 2023 Marin Nicasio+ full steel frame including fork. 650B tires at 47mm wide from WTB. For sure not the fastest or lightest setup but it's way up there in terms of comfort and has a bit of an edge on the rare gravel section. I am running a 1x9 with 40T up front and 11-46T rear cassette.
